From Kumartuli to New Town: Saha Family’s Kali Puja Turns 30

When the Saha family moved from Kumartuli to New Town, a 25-year-old Kali Puja travelled with them. This November, that tradition reaches its 30th year—with a familiar name from New Town’s restaurant scene helping carry it forward.

Family member and local entrepreneur Souraav Saha, who runs Euphoria World Cuisine in CE Block, Action Area I, is spearheading this year’s arrangements.

A Kumartuli tradition with a New Town chapter

The story began in 1997 at the Saha family home in Madan Mohan Tala, Kumartuli.

Sandip Kumar Saha, son of the late Shyama Pada Saha, started the puja there. Shyama Pada was known locally for his social work.

The family worships the goddess as Shyama Kali (শ্যামাকালী). Govardhan Puja and Annakut also became part of its annual celebrations.

For 25 years, the puja remained at the Kumartuli home. It then moved to New Town with the family. The 2026 celebration is its 30th annual edition.

Shayama Puja in New Town's Saha Family

Kali Puja on 8 November, Annakut on 10 November

The family’s programme lists 8 November 2026 for Shyama Kali Puja and 10 November 2026 for Govardhan Puja and Annakut.

The 10 November Annakut, also referred to as Annobhog, is only for invited guests. The organisers have not supplied public visiting arrangements for the family’s Kali Puja on 8 November.

For the Sahas, this year’s celebrations bring together two chapters of the same family story: its beginnings in Kumartuli and its continuing life in New Town.
