Salt Lake | February 16, 2026
Accenture Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation has announced a major push to revamp several markets across Salt Lake, doubling its budget allocation for the upcoming financial year.
In the 2026–27 fiscal budget, the Corporation has earmarked ₹2 crore for market renovation—double the ₹1 crore allocated in the previous year.
The move is aimed at modernising infrastructure and helping local markets compete with the rising trend of online shopping.
Renovation Work Across Multiple Markets
Mayor Krishna Chakraborty stated that repair and development work has already been completed at GD, ED, BD, EC, CA and AB-AC markets.
In the next phase, renovation plans will cover AG, AA and AE markets. The civic body currently maintains 16 markets across Salt Lake.
According to officials, the renovation will focus on:
- Structural repairs of roofs and walls
- Installation of new paver tiles
- Modernisation of electrical systems
- Renovation and improved maintenance of public toilets
The objective is to make markets cleaner, safer and more comfortable for shoppers.

Special Focus on GD and Baishakhi Markets
Significant progress has already been made in the GD Block market. The first phase of the project took about 1.3 crore rupees to finish. The second phase will soon commence, according to Mayor-in-Council Rajesh Chirimar.
In the interim, the State Government has received a special proposal for the renovation of Baishakhi Market valued at ₹70 lakh.
Here, safety is still the primary concern, particularly in view of a shed collapse incident that injured five people almost three years ago.
Competing with Online Shopping
The growing recognition of online shopping platforms has culminated in a decrease in foot traffic in local markets, according to civic officials.
The objective of the renovation initiative is to improve the accessibility and appeal of traditional markets so that inhabitants will return to their local stores.
By encouraging business and raising municipal revenue, improved infrastructure is also anticipated to help local traders.
In the upcoming months, Salt Lake‘s markets should see a noticeable change as a result of the doubled budget and phased redevelopment plan.
