TCS Acquires Land in Bengal Silicon Valley for Major Growth

Tata Consultancy Services has formally completed the purchase of a 20-acre land parcel at the Bengal Silicon Valley Tech Hub in New Town, Kolkata, for ₹94 crore — marking a decisive step forward in what has been one of the most closely watched corporate real estate deals in eastern India.

If you’ve been following this story, you’ll recall that the West Bengal government sanctioned the allotment back in March 2023.

TCS had been given a 36-month window to begin operations from that date. With the purchase now sealed via a 99-year lease, the clock is well and truly ticking — and by all accounts, the company is moving fast.

The government’s nod was the headline then. The purchase itself is the headline now.

For context, TCS recently secured land in Visakhapatnam at a symbolic ₹0.99 per acre. The Kolkata plot costs roughly 475,000 times more per acre — a number that says everything about how seriously both TCS and the market rate New Town as a destination.

The Campus: Scale That Warrants Attention

The campus won’t arrive all at once. TCS is building it across two phases, and Phase I already has its building plan sanctioned by the New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA).

Phase I covers 9 lakh square feet and will include an 11-storey office tower, designed to accommodate approximately 5,000 employees.

Phase II adds another 1.5 million square feet to the equation. Once fully operational, the campus will span 2.4 million square feet in total — creating 25,000 direct jobs.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee personally announced the NKDA’s Phase I approval last June, taking a pointed swipe at those who question Bengal’s investment appeal. The message was clear: this is proof of delivery, not just promise.

What It Means for Kolkata’s Tech Ecosystem

The Bengal Silicon Valley Tech Hub was inaugurated in August 2018 with an ambitious vision: attract ₹1 trillion in investment and generate 1 lakh direct jobs across a 250-acre zone.

As of 2022, investment commitments had already hit that ₹1 trillion mark, with major data centre projects from NTT Global Data Centres, STT Global, CtrlS, and Airtel Nxtra all underway alongside the IT heavyweights.

TCS completing this land deal adds significant credibility to that pipeline. When India’s largest IT services company formalises a ₹94 crore purchase — not just an MoU, not just a letter of intent — it sends an unmistakable signal to other investors still on the fence.

For the 25,000 professionals who will eventually work out of this campus, it’s more than a workplace. It’s the kind of anchor investment that reshapes a city’s economic geography.
